Throughout much of human history, abnormal behavior was linked to superstition and witchcraft. The People who displayed abnormal behavior were accused of being possessed by demons. Often they would use forms of torture (whipping, starving, etc.) to drive the demons out, but often the cure was worse than the illness itself.
