Question and answer
Solve the system of equations: x + 2y = 5 3x + 5y = 14
The solution is x = 3 and y = 1. Sol'n: Multiply first equation by 3: 3x + 6y = 15 Subtract second equation: (3x + 6y) - (3x + 5y) = 15 - 14 y = 1 Substitute into x + 2y = 5: x + 2(1) = 5 x = 3
