I agree it doesn't sound right but a lot of grammar rules don't sound right.
For example the predicate nominative case is often written wrong because it sounds better. The person knocking on the door is I. is often written as The person knocking on the door is me.

selymi, looking at the sentence again, I am even more convinced that the correct pronoun is singular. The verb is even singular.
It doesn't feel right to unflag an incorrect answer. Please check the education sites I linked. They are the most reliable.

I also agree with Deb's answer.
With compound subjects joined by or/nor, the referent pronoun agrees with the antecedent closer to the pronoun.
In the sentence, Carol is closer so the pronoun should be singular.

I agree. Deb's answer is the correct answer and her source is realiable. I remember answering the same question last week and my answer was the same as Deb's answer.

It should be flag because it is wrong, let us not give other expert wrong impression of moderators with flagging conversation.

OK, no problem, if it s wrong it should be flagged of course. I guess it s just bad luck, two different sources with the same wrong answer.
Thanks for clarifications.
