Let: x = slice of cheesecake, y = slice of pie
First equation = 4x + y = 18
Second equation = 7x + 3y = 34
Use first equation to find y:
4x + y = 18
y = 18 - 4x
Subtitute y to the second equation to find x:
7x + 3y = 34
7x + 3(18 - 4x) = 34
7x + 54 - 12x = 34
7x - 12x = 34 - 54
-5x = - 20
x = - 20/-5
x = 4
$4 is the cost of one slice of cheesecake.
