Earth, the Moon, and the Sun are never exactly aligned. C. The orbital plane of the Moon is inclined relative to the orbital plane of Earth. D. In order for a solar eclipse to occur, Earth must be a specific distance from the Sun.

The Sun exerts a much stronger gravitational force on Earth than the Moon does, but the Moon is largely responsible for the tides of Earth's oceans. Which statement BEST explains this? A. Because the Moon orbits Earth, it creates enough gravitational force to cause tides. B. Because the Moon can eclipse the Sun, its gravitational field can affect Earth's oceans. C. Because the Moon is solid rather than gaseous, its gravitational field has a greater effect on Earth's oceans. D. Because ...

The Sun exerts a much stronger gravitational force on Earth than the Moon does, but the Moon is largely responsible for the tides of Earth's oceans. This is because the Moon is so much nearer the Earth than the Sun is, so is able to have a greater effect.
