Slaves were transported to the New World from Africa by ship.

Conditions on board ship during the Middle Passage were: The men were packed together below deck and were secured by leg irons, The space was so cramped they were forced to crouch or lie down.

"Loose packing" provided for fewer slaves per ship in the hopes that a greater percentage of the cargo would arrive alive while "Tight packing" captains believed that more slaves, despite higher casualties, would yield a greater profit at the trading block.
