Why was I flagged? If you square a negative variable, the answer is positive variable. So -18 is still the square root of 324 which also included in the choices. Can someone please have my answer be unflagged?
Added 4/17/2014 8:01:53 PM
Square root of a positve number is always positive. I think you are confused by the squared calculation such as x^2 = 324, then x = 18 or -18
Added 4/17/2014 8:18:33 PM
I only answered according to the choices. A square root of a number is equivalent to a number multiplied by itself. If you multiple a negative number such as -18 by itself the answer is a positive number which makes it a possible answer as a square root.

Sorry to be disrespectful but I'm just trying to prove that my answer is correct.

yeswey, this has gotten me flagged in the past. Math students are taught that all positive numbers have two square roots; one positive and one negative.

I think i am a bit confused.
Thank you Deb; i will check later soon.

i am wondering if in that case this conversation is also incorrect:

Apparently it is incorrect yeswey. I usually always give the positive square root though and I think most people do. In this question though the answer choices only show both. It's been many years since I was in school and I never remembered giving both positive and negative square root but it does make sense to me now.

Deb,
I think Jerry's answer is correct. It should only have one solution.
Please review the following website:
(give examples and only postive numbers)

Here it wrote:
The solution for ax2 + bx + c = 0 is

x = [-b ± (b2 - 4ac)]/2a

If the sign meant plus and minus, why then why would we need the ± sign in the formula?

16 is 4, only.

If x^2 = 16, then x = 4 or -4 under which situation 4 or -4 are both square roots of 16. Thats what i understand the thorem.
But Sqrt(16) should be only positive number 4.

I'm not that advanced in math. I think in most cases just the positive square root is needed. For the question in this conversation, there are options given and they include both positive and negative square root.

Thank you Deb; however, i am still not convinced, and i would like more experts to share their opinions.

Okay, that makes sense. But if the question is asked the way it is in this conversation, What are the square roots (plural) then tektek10's answer is correct.
Added 4/20/2014 11:30:09 PM
Okay.
Added 4/20/2014 11:39:37 PM
I agree with Deb. The question was asked clearly. I got the same answer as tektek's.

Thank you for your opinion Andrew.

A circular piece of glass has a radius of 0.8 meters. The glass sells for $4.60 per square meter. The total cost of the circular piece of glass is $9.24.
Area of a circle is pi*r^2 = 3.14*0.8^2 = 2.0096 square meter.
2.0096 * $4.60 = $9.24
