D-Day is another name for the Battle of Normandy which began on June 6, 1944 and involved 156,000 American, British and Canadian troops landing on five beaches along the coast of France’s Normandy region, at that time heavily defended by the Germans. It was the beginning of the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation.
