Expand the first bracket
3(a - 4) + 17 = 3a - 12 + 17 = 3a + 5
Expand the second bracket
2(5a - 2) + 1 = 10a - 4 + 1 = 10a - 3
Substitute back
5{[3a + 5] - [10a - 3]}
= 5{3a + 5 - 10a + 3}
= 5{-7a + 8}
Multiply by 5
5(-7a + 8) = -35a + 40
Answer: -35a + 40
