Expand their empires. Most of Europe saw Africa as a place they could divide up amongst themselves. [ It was about prestige (expanding their lands and powers) and it was about resources (Many of the African colonies had natural resources that could be harvested cheaply and processed back in Europe and sold for a huge profit). ]
