The first machine to look something like a computer was Charles Babbage's "difference engine", later refined into the "analytical engine" from around 1834. Programming was achieved by punched cards. Neither engine was ever actually built to completion at the time, but a working model of Difference Engine No 2, designed by Babbage, was eventually built by the Science Museum, London, and exhibited from 2002.
