Why did the state of Georgia begin auctioning off Cherokee land in 1828? Prospectors wanted to mine for gold on Cherokee territory. Georgians wanted to set up cotton plantations on the land. The Cherokee were harboring runaway enslaved people. American settlers had begun to cross the Appalachians.
