User: Why is it believed that the universe is expanding?

Weegy: Edwin Hubble is the cosmologist responsible for developing the theory that the universe is expanding. [ By studying the wavelengths of light Hubble observed red shifts and determined that the universe is in fact expanding and is accelerating as it goes. There are several theories about what the end result may be. Some say it will expand forever until all the stars burn out, others believe it will slow down and then converge into a 'Big Crunch.' ]

Most stars show no parallax angle because they are located at such great distances from Earth that their apparent movement against more remote background stars is too small to measure.
