In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus explains that the case is not about Tom but actually about Mayella and society. Society at the time had a rigid rule that black people and white people must not date or marry. Mayella - not Tom - breaks this rule when she sets out to get Tom alone with her. When found out, Mayella lays the blame on Tom to cover her own guilt. But by the standards of the society of the time, as Atticus laments, it will be Tom who stands accused.
