Theaters in Shakespeare's day were typically an open yard surrounded by tiered, covered galleries. Audiences could stand in the open for a penny and sit in the lower sections of the covered area for two. People liked to consume snacks and drinks while they watched the play. Plays were popular and well-attended but audiences were not always well-behaved: there are accounts of people being rowdy and disruptive.
