Acids take place (or form) when substances release hydrogen ions (H ) in water. This usually happens when acidic compounds like sulfur dioxide (SO ) or nitrogen oxides (NO ) mix with water in the atmosphere, creating sulfuric or nitric acid, which then falls as acid rain.
