Solubility (miscibility when concerning two liquids) depends on the solvent and the solute being able to interact with each other through similar intermolecular forces. [ Water and ethanol can both participate in hydrogen bonding and therefore they are miscible. Cyclohexane is do not have any polar atoms or bonds and therefore can only interact through London dispersion forces, which is incompatible with water since the small size and polar nature of water precludes it from participating in London dispersion force interactions. Cyclohexane will be miscible in other liquids that share its
properties, such as octane. ]
