Question and answer
what is the vision of Aravind Eye care System? what is the role of operations in meeting it?
Dr. Govinda Venkataswamy (fondly called Dr. V) founded the Aravind Eye Hospitals in1976 with an 11-bed facility in Madural, which performed all types of eye surgeries. Its goalwas to offer quality care at reasonable cost. [ In 1978, a 70-bed free hospital was opened toprovide the poor with quality care. In 2004, Aravind Eye Care System comprised Eye CareFacilities at Madural, Theni, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Pondicherry (Exhibit 1) andperformed nearly 230,000 eye surgeries and handled 1,640,000 outpatient visits (Exhibit2). It is recognized as the world’s most productive eye hospital
handling the largest patientvolume. Its website states that “with less than 1% of the country’s ophthalmic manpower,Aravind accounts for 5% of the ophthalmic surgeries performed nationwide”. Its missionhas now become to “eradicate needless blindness by providing appropriate, compassionate and quality eye care for all”. Each of the Aravind Hospitals has two sections: one is the Main Hospital for thepaid patients and other is free hospital for nonpaying patients. The series of steps, which apatient normally goes through, is the same in both the hospitals: patients are initiallyregistered, their vision is recorded and they undergo a preliminary examination followed bytesting of tension and tear duct function. This follows refraction test and final examination. While the assistants carry out many of the intermediate steps, a senior ophthalmologistdoes the final examination. The two sections differ in size, the kind of beds they provideand general kind of patients, who come to use them. However, the same pool of doctorsand nurses serves both sections. “The hallmarks of the Aravind model are quality care andproductivity at prices that everyone can afford. A core principle of the Aravind System isthat the hospital must provide services to the rich and poor alike, yet be financially self-supporting ]

explain the factors influencing ethical environment a service organization
Weegy: Over the years, the term ethics in organizational performance has long been associated with management scholars and business leaders around the world. [ There is a broad agreement around the world that as a matter of corporate policy, every organization strives to be committed in a manner that is ethically transparent. Steinberg (1994) argued that ethics in the world of organization’s business involve “ordinary decency” which encompasses such areas as integrity, honesty and fairness. Behaving in an ethical manner is seen as part of the social responsibility of organization, which itself depends on the philosophy that organizations ought to impact the society in ways that goes beyond the usual profit maximization objective Adenubi (2000). It is often argued in many instances that, it is in the interest of an organization to behave in a way that recognizes the need for moral and ethical content in managerial decision as this will benefit the organization especially in the long run. ] (More)
