Weegy: Word endings, though this is a huge oversimplification. Old English syntax was rather free due to the presence of a case system. [ Case is a grammatical system under which a word inflects (usually by adding an ending to the word) based on its usage in a sentence. This way, you could put words in any order you wished and you'd still be able to identify the subject, object and verb without difficulty. Many modern languages that still use case, such as Polish and Estonian, have fairly free syntax for the same reason. ]
