Crude oil forms from the remains of ancient marine organisms, such as plankton and algae, that sank to the ocean floor millions of years ago. Over time, these organic materials were buried by sediment and subjected to heat and pressure. This process, known as diagenesis, transformed the organic matter into hydrocarbons, which eventually became crude oil.
