jtj_hello: As much as possible please refrain from asking users to provide choices as an answer to the question. It would be best to provide general information that may possibly answer the question or you may Google search the question. There are instances that similar question was posted on other sites.

samn, it's okay to ask for options if the question contains which of the following is not or except; it is allowed in the rules. However, I also agree with you that if it's possible to answer, then we should answer.

@andrew: I understand the case. But there are instances that similar question has been asked to other sites. I usually check the web to trace for similar question and to view the options. If there isn't any then I resort to providing general information. If information needed is too broad then I ask the user for options using the "send note," if no reply then that's the time I inform the user that I can't provide the correct answer since no options were provided.

I understand, but my point is, it's okay to stick with the rules. If an expert wants to do an extra research, then much better. We all want to provide answers as much as possible.
Added 3/15/2014 6:54:52 AM
It is ok to ask for options with questions like this according to the rules. There are instances that 2 similar questions have different options with them.
Added 3/15/2014 7:07:08 AM
My attention was called when I asked the user for the options. I read in the blog that it was okay to ask for the options, so I did based on the parameters as stated on the blog. I only stopped asking for options when my attention was called and was reminded about providing general options.
I thought I should do (remind other experts) the same thing, specially when similar questions are on other sites.

I am starting to get confused on what to remind to do and what not.
Added 3/15/2014 7:26:11 AM
I asked for clarifications regarding this.

I'll let you know, i'll post it on your feed. Thanks!
Added 3/15/2014 7:34:02 AM
@andrew: Thanks! That will be a big help and will clear things up. [smile]
Added 3/15/2014 7:39:30 AM
I understand your sentement samn and I do the same for question which has the following but for questions that says "except and not" I go back to the rule that says we are okay for us to ask for the options. Since flagging this seems to be just your rule or at least needs to be clarified, can a moderator unflag this because I'm not violating anything nor providing incorrect answer.

jtj_hello: It was unflagged by jeifunk. This matter is being directed to the admin for clarification.

jtj_hello, I have unflagged the other conversation:

Saw it jay901, thank you!
Added 3/15/2014 7:58:51 AM
It was unflagged by jay901. The other one was unflagged by jeifunk. Thanks to both.
Samn, even if admin decide to say that we should do what you suggested, only questions answered in such manner moving forward will be flag because if we flag questions answered that way before, it will cause multiple flags to experts who already answered it that way.
Added 3/15/2014 8:04:13 AM
Noted.
Added 3/15/2014 8:21:46 AM
samn, please only flag if a question is wrong or breaks a rule. If you want a rule changed, that's fine, you can send a message to Weegy Admin, but until it is changed we can't flag experts who are abiding by the current rules.
Added 3/15/2014 8:35:44 AM
This is confusing now. I unflag this conversation because I find samn's answer incorrect.

However, if we are to correct a response we should really flag it and add the right answer.
Added 3/15/2014 8:52:38 AM
Wait. I am not making any rules here. My attention was called before regarding asking options. I am just doing what was done to me.
I have answered a question with a tequedt gor the user to provide options, my answer was flaggef and another user provided answer and options coming from other sites. I never raised it up coz the expert was able to provide the answer using options from other site. I am just doing things based on experience and i have no intention to make my own rules or bend any rules.
I apologize if somebody got offended on my actions or reply.

I agree with you jei.

The addition to the rule that we can ask for options if the question contains "not" or "except" is new. I think that might be where the confusion is. We can add an answer without flagging though. We only flag if an incorrect answer is provided.
Added 3/15/2014 9:23:46 AM
I think if you have experienced that before samn, you should raise it instead of just letting it passed by. That way your confusion can be clarified.
Added 3/15/2014 9:25:56 AM
You can also post that conversation here, I'm sure it should be on your flagged answer list. Because this could be a different scenario where "except" or "not" isn't mentioned.
Added 3/15/2014 9:27:43 AM
Samn, I think you are referring to the old rule. Remember that rules can be updated.

Added 3/15/2014 9:36:22 AM
I am not asking for it to be retracted because I believe it should be flagged because a correct answer was provided.

The above convo was one of my basis why i flagged and provided and answer. The other convo wherein my attention was called, ita difficult to find since it wasnt flagged.

In my opinion, to confirm with the rules it is okay to ask for options provided it is "except" and "not" and it is okay to flag the answer if a correct answer will provided.

With the above question, I flagged it because I have an answer to the question. I didn't flagged it because on how it was answered. It juat ao happen that andrew posted a note before I was able to completely provide the answer with the sources.
I guess the only mistake I did was to remind jtj about providing gen info or atleast do extra research. For this, my apologies to jtj.
Added 3/15/2014 6:02:45 PM
In my opinion, I think the reminder given to me about providing best effort answers on "except" & "not" type of questions is the better approach than flagging it. I am no level 1 expert yet so I can not view your link to compare it with my 2 questions that were flag.

I do not agree that a flag has to be issued even if another expert was able to provide an answer because doing so would contradict the rules from which most experts are trying to based on.
Added 3/15/2014 6:27:20 PM
You can add a new answer without flagging.
Added 3/15/2014 10:56:34 PM
We agree that (as stated in the rules) you can ask for the options when the question contains NOT or EXCEPT, so this answer shouldn't be flagged.
