Why can maps not show the exact size or shape of Earth?
Maps cannot show the exact size or shape of Earth because it is impossible to accurately depict a 3-dimensional object (the spherical Earth) on a flat, 2-dimensional surface (a map). Various methods, called projections, have been devised to create a reasonable compromise for this problem.
