The four D’s of abnormal psychology are: deviant, distress, dysfunction and danger. Deviant stands for behavior that is considered to be outside of the “norm” of society or better put “unusual” behavior. Different cultures to not see certain behaviors the same as others. For example, certain cultures consider it normal behavior to treat women with what western culture would consider disrespectful and abnormal behavior. Distress is considered to be an upsetting or unpleasant feeling. According to Kagan (2008), a diagnosis of a mental disorder is made when behaviors or emotions cause
distress in a person, which goes along with what many clinicians believe. Examples of distress are an uncomfortable or upsetting feeling, usually these feelings are constant. Dysfunction happens when behaviors or emotions interfere with the flow of a person’s everyday life. An example that comes to mind of dysfunction would be the movie What About Bob. Even though it is a funny movie, the man cannot function on a normal scale like everyone else due to his mental illness, which is a true story for many people. The last D is danger, which simply means to be harm to others or one’s self. I think that we have all probably watched a movie or a TV show where someone was so into their alternate reality or fears that they truly believed that freedom will come from harming others or themselves.
Some people think that psychological abnormalities are something to joke about. We have all said it before, “so and so has mental issues” but I think that this class is going to give us a very real look and new understanding of a subject that is very real and damning to so many people.
Mental is illness is quite common in the general public, there is no shame in having one. The shame is that most conditions are treatable, yet there can be problems in seeking treatment, because of the stigma.
