a = 1, b = 2, c = -1

b^2 - 4ac = 2^2 - 4(1)(-1) = 8

x = [-2 ± sqrt(8)]/2

= -1 ± sqrt(2)

The solution for the equation x^2 + 2x - 1 = 0 is x = -1 + sqrt(2) or x = -1 - sqrt(2)
