At Mappleton, coastal management strategies included rock groynes to trap sediment and build up the beach, a rock revetment to absorb wave energy and protect the cliffs, and cliff reprofiling with vegetation to stabilize the cliffs; these measures protected the village and road but caused increased erosion further south.
