Alexandre-Emile Béguyer de Chancourtois, a French geologist, was the first person to notice the periodicity of the elements. He devised a rudimentary periodic table in the 1860s. In 1865, the English chemist John Newlands took the idea further when he classified the fifty-six known elements into eleven groups, based on their physical properties. In 1869, the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev was the first scientist to make a periodic table similar to the one used today.
