When heated in air, zinc undergoes a chemical reaction where it combines with oxygen to form zinc oxide. This process is known as oxidation. As the zinc reacts with the oxygen in the air, it oxidizes to produce a white powdery coating of zinc oxide on its surface. This coating acts as a protective layer, preventing further oxidation of the underlying zinc.
