User: is coral edible?

Weegy: Coral reefs are comprised of the skeletons of small organisms called polyps. The skeletons are made of a substance called calcium carbonate or more commonly known as limestone. [ Since calcium carbonate is used in antacids and consumed as a calcium supplement, I suppose you could technically eat coral. However, coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the world and they are already threatened by ocean acidification, so it would probably be best not to start eating them. ]

Coral itself is not typically considered edible, as it is a hard, calcium carbonate structure, but some coral polyps can be consumed in certain culinary contexts, such as in some traditional dishes or for their nutritional value.
