what is the importance of purpose, audience, tone, and content in academic writing
If the writer hasn't an objective tone, it won't be "academic." If the writer doesn't know the audience and what the audience knows and doesn't know, he wastes his (and their) time. [ Tone must be respectful (these are degree holders, after all, so can't insult them.) And without content, why even bother? ]
