Baghdad, the capital of Iraq There can surely be very few prople in the world today who do not know that Baghdad is the capital of Iraq. The city has been constantly before our eyes and, perhaps even more, has imprinted its images of the mind's eye that flashes upon one unawares. This is the city of war, of smoke rising from the rubble just as it rose from the ruins of Troy, of suicide bombers and scenes of horrific bloodshed, of public bereavement, of weeping children amidst the desolation, of the wail of despairing mothers, of anger and frustration and deep, deep exhaustion. This is Baghdad, the city of tragedy, the capital of Iraq. Yet even less than half a century ago, the capital of Iraq was one of the most beautiful and gracious cities of the world. A city filled with orchards and fountains, a city of graceful minarets, a city of elegant tree-lined streets and charming winding alleys, a city of colour, from the burnt siena of the walls to the viridian of the palms to the azure of the skies. Baghdad was a most prized posting. To spend a few years in the capital of Iraq was the jewel in the crown of a diplomatic career - the years to look back on with nostalgia and pleasure. The city on the Tigris with its fields irrigated by canals from the Euphrates - a more romantic and historically significant setting is difficult to imagine. Baghdad lay in the midst of a land of milk and honey, amidst a mosaic of date plantations, orchards and market gardens. This once great city, the capital of Iraq, was also the capital of Harun al-Rashid, the fifth 'Abbasid caliph who made Baghdad a world centre of learning, where Greek scientific texts were translated into Arabic. Harun al-Rashid, who exchanged gifts with the Holy Roman Emperor, Charlemagne, and in whose court literary and intellectual life flourished. Here, in what is now the capital of Iraq, the great Arab poet Abu Nuwas first penned his immortal verses. Baghdad is, in many people's eyes, the fabled city of a Thousand and One Nights, where Scheherazade spun her immortal tales and so gained immortailty for herself - the city of Aladdin and Sindbad. Baghdad was an 'Abbasid city, founded 1300 years ago by the 2nd Abbasid Caliph, al-Mansur. But the name Baghdad came from a small Christian settlement nearby. al-Mansur called his new city Madinat-al-Salam, the City of Peace. Madinat-al-Salam, the capital of Iraq -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mesopotamian Valley originated in ancient Iraq which was situated in the Tigris-Euphrates river valley. This is an Arab country which has bagged a position of the 65th largest nation on Earth which even succeeds Germany, Norway and Japan. Its vast size of 68,754 square miles can alone be an equivalent to the size of California. If you are planning a tour to Iraq, then it is essential to take into account some basic facts. The capital of Iraq is Baghdad is a basic thing that you must know. Moving ahead, this country is gradually trying to its stable condition with departure of the foreign invaders. It is also trying its best and is on the verge of attainment of autonomy. The overall circumstances are stabilizing with the passing time and people are able to live in peace. Refugees are returning to their roots with the completion of the war. They consider it safe to return to their homeland. Iraq has been a place of interest for many business enterprises to deal with the associates there. Despite all these essentials, the country is not a safe location.
