Ike has some nickels and dimes amounting to $2.90. The number of dimes is 1 less than twice the number of nickels. How many coins of each kind does he have?
x = number of dimes
y = number of nickles
x = 2y - 1
10x + 5y = 290
10(2y - 1) + 5y = 290
25y - 10 = 290
25y = 300
y = 12
x = 23
