explain the positive and negative aspects of being labbled as having a learning disability?
Being diagnosed as having a learning disability can help both parent and child. Parents may come to understand that there is a reason their child behaves the way he does. [ A child who fully understands what a learning disability is and what it means in his particular case, can develop a better understanding of who he is, and may come to appreciate his strengths instead of focusing on his weaknesses. Understanding that he is not "stupid" can go a long way toward building his self-esteem. On the other hand Parents, teachers and other children may all treat the child in ways that may be
hurtful, and affect their self-esteem. Children can be cruel, and frequently call students labeled learning disabled names, and treat them as if they are defective. The child himself may feel negatively about himself because of the label.Ultimately, you have to weigh the pros and cons as they relate to your child's situation. It is important that you consider all of the factors as they apply to your child, and not jump to conclusions based on inaccurate or incomplete information. ]
