User: Of the young drivers who had been drinking and were killed in crashes, more than ___________ percent were unrestrained (not wearing seat belts).

Weegy: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTS) estimates the 15,147 lives were saved in 2007 by the use of seat belts. • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there are about 43,000 people killed in fatal car [ accidents each year in the United States. 63% of people killed in car accidents were not wearing seat belts. • According to the NHSTA in 2003, 34% of children age 5 and younger died in car crashes because they were unrestrained. • In 2007, 64% of young drivers in fatal crashes who had been drinking were not wearing their seat belt. • According to 2006 NHTSA information 75% of motor vehicle occupants over 65 years of age involved in crashes where wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash compared to 62% for the other adult (18-64 years old) occupants. • On average, inpatient hospital care costs for an unbelted crash victim are 50% higher than those for a belted crash victim. Society bears 85% of those costs, not the individuals involved. Every American pays about $580 a year toward the cost of crashes. If everyone buckled up, this figure would drop significantly. • The deaths and injuries caused by drivers and occupants not wearing their seat belt results in an estimated $26 billion in economic costs to society annually. • Seat belts save society an estimated $50 billion annually in medical care, lost productivity, and other injury-related cost. • In 2005, of the fatalities that occurred in rollover crashes in rural areas, 77% percent of the pickup truck occupants were unbelted and 68% of the SUV occupants were not wearing a seat belt. • Click It or Ticket (CIOT) is the most successful seat belt enforcement campaign ever established in America. This campaign has helped create the highest national seat belt usage rate of 83%. • Research shows that seat belts, when worn properly, reduces the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45% and cuts the risk of injury by 50%. ]
