Preparation and prevention: Put babies on their back to sleep and keep the sleep area clear of pillows, blankets, crib bumpers and toys. Co-sleeping and napping with an infant is discouraged. Use cordless window coverings, or cut cords short. Cut food into small pieces, discourage eating while playing or laying down and actively supervise children while they eat. Childproof the house by getting on your hands and knees and removing small items that could pose a choking hazard. “Anything that can fit inside a toilet paper tube is a choking hazard for children,” Fulton said.
