Weegy: Beowulf ? Unknown The Epic The epic is generally defined: A long narrative poem on a great and serious subject, related in an elevated style, and centered on a heroic or quasi-divine figure on whose actions depends the fate of a tribe, a nation, [ [ or the human race. The traditional epics were shaped by a literary artist from historical and legendary materials which had developed in the oral traditions of his nation during a period of expansion and warfare (Beowulf, The Odyssey, The Iliad). ======================================? Why Should I Care? Come on, do we really have to tell you why you should care about Beowulf? Beowulf, a great and glorious hero arrives from over the sea, clad in a shirt of shining mail, ready to do barehanded battle with a demonic monster. If that leaves you wanting more, Beowulf is ready to deliver. Once the demonic monster bites the dust, his bigger, badder, even more demonic mom arrives to avenge her son's death. But that's still not the climax. Just in case anyone doubted Beowulf's prowess at this point, a dragon shows up to test him to the limit. This isn't dry-as-dust literature that you fall asleep over; it's the kind of thing you pay ten bucks to see while eating popcorn! (Although the recent Beowulf movie goes just a little bit off-script.) OK, if you're still not hooked, try this: Beowulf is the oldest major work of literature in English. In fact, it's in such old English (technical name: "Old English") that it seems like a foreign language to us today, because our words have changed so much since it was written. It's a glimpse of an ancient Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian culture. But this history lesson isn't just names, dates, and agricultural innovations. Instead, it's gleaming golden armor, straining sinews, and wild drunken parties that go all night because everyone would rather tell stories about past glorious victories than think about the fact that they'll probably die horribly tomorrow. It's a brutal world, but one that offers the possibility of fame ? and maybe even fortune, if you're lucky. ] ]

One change between the book and the movie is that Beowulf does not go home. In the film he stays in the land of the Danes. This is because king Hrothgar commits suicide and leaves all of his belongings including the queen to Beowulf. Also Grendel’s mother defeats all of Beowulf’s army in the night. When Beowulf sets out to go and defeat Grendel’s mother he is overwhelmed by her beauty. This is yet another difference in the book Grendel's mother was a hideous creature but in the movie she is beautiful. She leads to the demise of Beowulf.

A major plot change in the movie occurs when Beowulf goes to kill Grendel’s mother. Instead of killing her he instead has a child with her. This is a big change to the story in the book this event does not occur. Their child is portrayed as a dragon a beast who is essentially all of Beowulf’s wrong doings. His wrong doing are manifested in the form of a dragon it’s like he is the cause of his own destruction. Beowulf’s son will ultimately be the demise of Beowulf at the end of the 2007 movie adaptation.
