Balance the following reaction.
CH3OH + O2 ? CO2 + H2O
CH3OH + O2 - > CO2 +H20
1) Balance C 1st. (already done)
2) Balance H 2nd. (4 hydrogen on left, so put 2 in front of H2O).
CH3OH + O2 - > CO2 +2H20
3) Balance O last.
Have 4 O on right, so need 4 right on left. [ You have 1 in CH3OH, so you need 3 in the O2. What number times 2 gives you three. (1 1/2)
CH3OH + 1 1/2 O2 - > CO2 +2H20
4) But you can have 1 1/2 as a coefficient so go back and double everything to balance.
2CH3OH + 3O2 - > 2CO2 +4H2O source: yahoo ]
