An ox-bow lake forms when a meander of a river is cut off from the main channel. Over time, erosion and deposition cause the river to create a new, straighter path, leaving the curved meander isolated. The abandoned meander becomes a crescent-shaped lake, called an ox-bow lake, usually filled with water from rainfall or groundwater.
