Another point of clarification gratefully received: Here there are three questions, the answers to the first two of which I have edited for completeness, the third of which gave the incorrect answer, and I have added a correct answer. I can't CONFIRM the question because one of the answers was wrong - yes? Should I now FLAG the question because (only) one of the three answers was incorrect?

In theory there's nothing to stop us editing incorrect answers to change them to the correct answers. Is there a case to be made for doing this?
Added 1/21/2014 3:26:51 PM
Janet, I think it should be edited because it was an auto answer. If it's an expert answered, we should flag it and add the answers in the archives to all of the questions.
Added 1/21/2014 3:31:02 PM
What I usually do with the similar case is I edit the whole conversation because it was an auto answer and no accounts will be affected.

If it's an expert's answer, I flag it and then add all the answers in the archives.

Andrew, thank you, I take you to mean that I could have edited the third, incorrect answer to provide a correct answer. You see I've thought all along that we mustn't edit incorrect answers, only correct ones. (I'm sure I got that from a blog)

Also, I know it hasn't happened here, but these multiple-question conversations often include both Auto and Expert answers, which can further cloud the issue.

For me personally, Janet, I won't hit confirm unless every answer in the conversation has a correct answer. We can edit correct answers in the wrong form (typos, spelling, etc.) but I don't think we are supposed to edit wrong answers. The way you did it is how I would have done it and I would not confirm. I would flag if one answer is wrong if it is . If any of the questions are answered by an expert (correctly) I won't flag as it is not fair to the expert.

Thank you Deb, that confirms what I thought about editing wrong answers, and flagging the whole conversation if one answer among a number of auto answers is incorrect. And I remember you advising me early on not to flag if any of the questions were correctly answered by an expert.

However, is there really any reason why we shouldn't edit wrong answers?
Added 1/21/2014 5:25:10 PM
I guess it wouldn't hurt anything to edit a wrong auto answer.
The things is, we have an advantage with being able to edit conversations and it could be abused if wrong answers are edited for ourselves or other experts. Limiting editing to just editing for from, rather than corrections as a general practice makes sense in that regard.

deb, so, should we flag the wrong auto answers or just edit them instead? Among us, there seem to be a contradicting opinion on this. I think wrong auto answers should be flagged.

Yes, that is how I understand it. Wrong answers are flagged. Correct answers that are not perfect in grammar, spelling, proper format, etc. should be edited. Correct answers with good form should be confirmed.

Janet, what I meant is if the other questions were answered by the auto answer correctly then the last question was answered by an expert incorrectly, I would flag it (as usual) and then I would add the correct answer to the archives, but I would not confirm the original conversation (because of the wrong answer from an expert).

And especially, we don't flag a conversation if the auto answers are incorrect, and the expert answered the last question correctly because it is not fair, as Deb said.

However, if the conversation contains all auto answers, for example there are three questions in a conversation, two of the auto answers are correct (but not in a correct format) and the other auto answer is incorrect (and not in a correct format too), I would edit the whole conversation and confirm it instead of adding new answers.

Deb is right that wrong answers should be flagged and correct answers not in a correct format should be edited.
