are there any dysfuctions of walmart for society.
Wal Mart plays a major part in the globalisation the market.
It has grown into the number 1 retailer among the Fortune 500 - and is America's largest employer. It does more business than Target, Sears, Kmart, J.C. [ Penney, Safeway, and Kroger combined
This means it has major power as
- the no 1 buyer of the commodities it sells,
-as an employer in the global labour market, and
-over the extent to which it can avoid regulations over the quality of the goods it sells.
The dysfunctions of this power at each point of these sets of relationships have been widely discussed. (web sites below
are just a few of these criticisms of wal marts power and the way it uses it)
One of the key catalysts for social change might be the fact that Wal Mart does not allow unionised labour. In China this has a rather ironic effect as the unions there tend not to safeguard the interests of the workers but to maintain a balance between the level of exploitation of the workers and their discontent. Without this safeguard it has been argued that the working conditions of Wal Mart's Chinese labour force might be one of the major catalysts for social change in the poltical economy of China.
However the major catalyst factor in the USA is that Wal Mart has such a monopolistic control over retailing it has led to an increase in the impoverishment of whole regions of the USA see web site 4 below.
Finally Wal Mart has been accused of transferring the security and health costs of its workers to the taxpayers of each State in which it operates
