Note: OK, you probably have a wireless router in your home, which is how you connect to the Internet. [ (The laptop connects to the router via WiFi and the router talks to the Internet.)
There is a password involved in the connection (you know that already) but you won't be able to get your laptop to show the password to you. The best it will do is show you a bunch of *******s.
So, if you don't know the password, you'll have to log into the router and change the password. Logging into the router will likely require another password, which you problably don't have either. From the sounds of your problem, someone set this router up for you. You should contact them and ask them what the password is, or ask them to reconfigure the router with a new password that you both know.
You could also set the router back to its factory default settings. If the router is a Linksys, there is a small button on the back that you can press with the tip of a pen. Press and hold that button for 10 seconds (hold it a little longer just to be sure). That will reset the router. Give it at least 2 minutes to reset itself and come back online. Then you will be able to connect to the router without any passwords. You could leave it like that, but your network would be unsecure, which is bad. Also there is likely some configuration that will need done so that the router will connect to the Internet again. You may have to phone your internet service provider to get that configuration information.
To login to the router, open a browser and type in
http://192.168.1.1, and you'll be prompted for a username and password. Since you just reset the router, the username will be admin. Leave the password blank. Then you can go in and reconfigure the router.
If your router is not a linksys, you'll need to check the manual that came with it for reset instructions and default passwords. Or you can do a google search by brand name and "router default username and password"
