In my opinion, the CEO is describing the "innovative" function of management. Because his/her job is to empower their employees to think of things in new and different ways, not just to come to work and complete the tasks on a list.

sujaysen, innovative is not a function of management. Innovative is descriptive of a managerial style. The four functions of management are: Plan, Organize, Lead and Control.

It is definitely 'DIRECTION'

When one traditionally hears the word direction, they think of giving orders, opinions, etc.

To quote from:

"Direction is that inert-personnel aspect of management which deals directly with influencing, guiding, supervising, motivating sub-ordinate for the achievement of organizational goals. Direction has following elements: Supervision, Motivation, Leadership, Communication"

The CEO is trying to guide, encourage, motivate their employees to be the best that they can be through 'DIRECTION'
