Question and answer
Q: List two ways organizations can encourage high ethical standards. In your opinion, who or what entity must be responsible for encouraging and maintaining ethical standards at the organizational level?
A: The first step toward encouraging our workers to be more ethical is to establish a code of ethics. [ Th writing of this should be an organization-wide project to ensure that the code is comprehensive in addressing issues applicable in all areas of the organization. We can, however, develop a code of ethics for our own department employees. The writing of the code of ethics is only the
beginning. It must be communicated to all the workers in order to be effective. The best written code that is not well-known to all the workers is no better than the total absence of a guideline for ethical behavior. Communicating the code to employees gives more weight to it. Managers are viewed as more serious about their expectations for ethical behavior if the guidelines have been extensively communicated. This can be accomplished through department announcements, bulletin board postings or individual memoranda. The method of communication is not as important as the fact that the code definitely be well-known to all the employees of the firm. Workers cannot be expected to behave in a prescribed manner if they have not been appropriately apprised of the guidelines. When employees are familiar with their code of ethics they have a very clear idea of management's expectation of them. The guidelines for ethical behavior minimize the area of uncertainty for employees. The "right" course of action is more clearly obvious to workers when there is a code of ethics in place. It provides direction for our workers' behavior. Source: ]
