If I am due a refund, I e-file early to I get my refund quickly. If I owe, I put it off until April.
It could be free, but I pay $9.95 for them retain details about my employer and other sources of income or deductions until the following year, so I do not have to fill in that info again. It also keeps track of my cost basis for a non-deductible IRA contribution, for doing IRA to Roth IRA conversions (Form 8606).
So for me the benefits of e-filing are double checking everything, quicker refund (if I get one), and ease of doing taxes next year.
