Weegy: Common jobs for women included nurse, teacher, secretary, typist, telephonist, bookkeeper, shop assistant (sales clerk), librarian, seamstress, laundress, waitress, domestic servant. My mother and her sister both worked as telephonists in the 1930s. My mother's best friend was a shop assistant (sales clerk), she eventually became a buyer. My mother had another friend who was a secretary, one who was a bookkeeper, another who was a nurse, and a cousin who was a schoolteacher. These were fairly typical of the range of jobs done by middle class single women. My mother also had a friend who was an actress, and my father's sister was a model, but then as now these were rather more glamorous jobs than most women would have. There were some women doctors and lawyers, though not nearly as many as there are nowadays. Women serious about pursuing professional careers were more likely to stay single, it was not considered desirable for married women to have to work, and most women gave up work when they married, unless they could not afford to. The number of married women working increased in the 1930s because of the Depression, many women went out to work to help support their families.
