Minimum of 8 hours, longer or until fully dry is better. To help speed the process along, set up fans in the room to keep the air moving. Some of this depends on how wet you got the carpet and how thoroughly you ran the Rug Doctor over it to pick up the water. Those machines are pretty powerful and if you take your time and really get most of the water out with the machine, the rugs dry pretty quickly. This does mean making multiple passes in several directions over the same area but bear in mind with each pass you are getting not only more water but more dirt out.
