A comparison that doesn't use word like "similar to", "like", etc. is called a METAPHOR. It is a figure of speech in which one object or idea is DIRECTLY compared to another object or idea. This is in contrast to a SIMILE which uses the above-mentioned "phrases of comparison". Example of metaphor: The volcano is a fiery giant. Example of simile: The volcano IS LIKE a fiery giant.
