Question and answer
Q: What is the value of managing your physical and mental health and stress levels? How might these skills relate to academic and personal success?
A: Stress leads to various types of health problems like headaches, fatigue, insomnia, overeating or loss of appetite, muscle cramps, sour stomach, backaches, stiff neck and the list goes on. [ These problems may sound simple, but in the long run it can affect our immune, cardiovascular and nervous system. In fact, a 2008 British study reported that 54% of the population is more likely to suffer
heart attack and stroke if under stress. In another 2008 Swedish study, researchers proved that stress can double the risk of diabetes. The most effective solution to the problem of stress is a proper exercising routine. Exercise reduces stress and at the same time, relaxes the muscles, helps to cure insomnia and keeps your body fit and in shape. There are various stress relief exercises such as aerobic exercises, brisk walks and to some extent resistance training exercises. Deep breathing and meditation exercises can also be an outlet for stress, and helps in relaxing the mind. Stress means different things to different people. A situation that is intolerable to one person may be stimulating to another. What you feel is determined not just by events and changes in the outside world, but how you perceive and respond to them. The important point is that you can learn to recognise your own responses to stress and, if necessary, develop skills to deal with it. ]
