Question and answer
Q: Around what year did mystery fiction begin? A. 1830 B. 1900 C. 1790 D. 1600
A: Many readers enjoy a good mystery from the elaborate details for Agatha Christie to the tough PI works of Robert B Parker. [ However, where did it begin? Where and when did the detective story first appear? The development of the mystery genre and fiction in general mirrored the development of society according to historyofthemystery.com. This can be tied into the increased access to reading
material that was made possible with improvements in printing. As people read more, they became more individualistic and developed an appreciation for reasoning skills. Stories such as Robinson Crusoe gave focus to a relationship with their creator. Other literature focused upon personal responsibility. E.F Harkins and C.H.L. Johnson noted that anti-feminist sentiment arose by some critics since many readers and some writers were women. The critics challenged the women’s ability to address complex subjects. Additionally, many believed that time would be better spent studying religious texts rather than fiction. Read more at Suite101: Mystery: Where and When Did the Genre Begin? | Suite101.com ]
