How has social networking changed over the past years?
Over the last 10 years, we’ve seen social media galvanize thousands over politics, create as many industries as it has destroyed, [ and offer an abundance of visual and audio entertainmentA recent report by PEW found signs that social networks may be encouraging younger people to get involved in politics. You only need look at Twitter’s recent impact on the Iran elections, the Orange Revolution
in Ukraine, and even the election of Barack Obama to see that more and more people are getting involved in politics and are feeling they can make a difference. One of the most popular blogs on the web, The Huffington Post, is mainly political. Politics has a fast pace, and that lends itself well to social media. UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown said in June last year that because of the Internet, “foreign policy can no longer be the province of just a few elites.” Twitter even postponed an upgrade because of the important role it was playing in the Iran elections. These are all signs of both social media’s growing influence in politics, and the growing interest in politics from users of social media.Marketing and advertising is transforming itself from an industry reliant on mass market channels to one which must embrace the power of the consumer and (attempt to) engage in conversations. The traditional approach of wide reach and repetitive messaging is now being replaced by many much smaller, niche and people-centric activities. Advertising isn’t dying, it’s merely changing form. We now have more power and more choice. ]

• What role does the internet and social media play in globalization and the expansion of communities?
Weegy: Applications of the internet, distinctively the ‘World Wide Web’ over the past two decades has evolved dramatically. [ The shift from Web 1.0 to the present Web 2.0, from stagnant to highly interactive web pages recognises the cogent turning point in the use of rational internet. Web 2.0 which allow individuals personal input or ‘user generated content’ to a public cyber arena allowing the ability to engage with others beyond geographic confinements. Therefore, this paper will argue that ‘social media’ allows an amplification of human potential benefiting individuals, businesses and communities and serves as a catalyst for globalisation. Social media contains the community ideal, and can be defined as a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, that allows for the creation and exchange of user generated content. (Kaplan & Haenlian, 2009) Applications such as YouTube, Facebook, My Space and Flickr are just some examples of Web 2.0 and social media in action. Although, there is no systematic way in which social media applications can be categorised and with new sites appearing in cyberspace every day, the nexus of social media websites rely on two key elements. These elements pertain to a set of theories in the field of media research; the first element being social presence and media richness. “Social presence”, according to the social presence theory of (Short et al, 1976) states that media differ in the degree of social presence. This ‘presence’ discerns itself with the acoustic, visual and physical contact achievable through two or more communicative partners. In relation to social media, presence is influenced by propinquity through the medium, whether or not communication is asynchronous or synchronous. Therefore, “The higher the social presence, the larger the social influence that the communication partners have on each other’s behavioursocial media’s are allowing individuals the ... (More)

• What is the importance of social media in today’s society
Weegy: As the prevalence of social media continues to rise, organizations of all types and sizes are recognizing the ways in which social media can help them better understand, respond to, and attract the attention of their target audience. As a result, [ [ [ businesses are now jumping on the social media bandwagon at a rapid pace, embracing blogs, social networks, wikis, and other vehicles to achieve their marketing and public relations goals. What types of benefits can corporations achieve with an effective social media strategy? Get the Message Out Faster ? and to More People Social media enables more rapid sharing of information. It may take hours, or even days, for a new announcement to reach the end consumer through traditional channels. Why? Because when a press release is issued, a journalist or writer must first wade through all the sales and marketing lingo to find the key points. Then, the content must be re-purposed in article format, and sent to an editor or proofreader before it is published. Social media vehicles, on the other hand, allow for instantaneous dissemination of not just news, but images, audio, video, and other multimedia content as well. And because releases geared toward social media outlets contain only key highlights, pertinent facts, and hyperlinks to related statistics and quotes, the information they contain can be immediately picked up and posted by bloggers and other online journalists. Social media also provides more widespread coverage, enabling breaking news to reach a much larger and broader reader base than standard media outlets alone. While magazine readership and the number of available print publications continue to decline, the number of consumers using the Internet to access and share information continues to rise sharply. For example, one recent study showed that almost one out of every four Internet users ? over 41 million people total in 2006 ? visits MySpace on a regular basis. Improve Branding Social ... (More)

How is social networking used and by whom?
Weegy: A social networking service is an online service, platform, or site that focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relations among people, who, for example, share interests and/or activities. [ A social network service essentially consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Most social network services are web based and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging. Online community services are sometimes considered as a social network service, though in a broader sense, social network service usually means an individual-centered service whereas online community services are group-centered. Social networking sites allow users to share ideas, activities, events, and interests within their individual networks.[citation needed] The main types of social networking services are those which contain category places (such as former school year or classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages) and a recommendation system linked to trust. ] (More)

What would be the effect on society if social media were suddenly removed?
Weegy: it would leave a huge gap for people who live in this modern society. Communication and its methods are not static, it would put a limit on progress and fast ways of communicating we never had in the past. [ The invention of computers goes way back in time now, and its here to stay. For those who don't like technology then they can ignore it - some do....but usually they have lived decades.....Social media has good and bad points, on the whole I'd say it has now become a necessity in sociey and for socialising - its good to talk and get fast response from our friends, is it not.
