Hi, Deb. For review. I am not 100% sure also but my source says that "An allegory is basically an extended metaphor—a picture, poem, or story in which everything stands for something else"
www.shmoop.com/animal-farm/genre.html

Here's another source that says an allegory is: A form in which the action and other elements stand for something else in real life.
www.thefreedictionary.com/allegory

Thanks in advance.

I'm not really sure either. A symbol represents something else but an allegory has symbols in it. " The representation of abstract ideas or principles by characters, figures, or events in narrative, dramatic, or pictorial form." This seems closer to jeifunk's answer.

I know that flashcards aren't always reliable but this site shows something that stands for something else as symbol, and a story in which things represent parts of a doctrine or theme as allegory.
